TYPEFACE POSTERS

PROJECT

  • I created these posters to explore typography and the diverse ways type can be utilized in design. The fonts included in these posters are "Slayer Movie", "Alverata", and "Gaia Condensed".

Individual Artist Statements are provided for each piece under their "process" tabs.

Though the final designs differed greatly from my initial ideas, I feel I created strong design pieces and greatly expanded my typography knowledge.

  • For "Slayer Movie", I designed a poster around the letterforms themselves. I wanted to represent the uneasy tone the font gave off and create a poster with my likeness.

Initially, I admittedly struggled with the design aspect of the project. My initial iterations were random and chaotic; and they lacked the cohesion to provide a strong design. Despite this, I stuck with my original idea of a focal point.

The letterforms for "W" looked as if they were moving, so I settled on a spiral-based poster for the design. I experimented with various designs before I settled on a cyclone I preferred.

Overall, I feel that this project taught me crucial lessons about design as a whole; and I now consider the elements of design with every piece I create.

  • For "Alverata", I wanted to design a traditional type specimen poster. Like the font itself, I was inspired by ancient Roman architecture. I wanted to embody the font origins into the design as best as I could, so I played around with the various letterform structures.

Initially, I tilted the "A" letterforms in "Alverata" on their sides. I believed that they resembled a pillar more that way, but upon critique, I realized the flaws in this design approach.

I then tweaked the design around and played with color. I was satisfied with version 2 of the type specimen poster, but I wanted to experiment more with designs. Version 2 works as a type specimen poster as well.

Ultimately, I settled on a more illustrative design. This project taught me about kerning and effective space management.

  • For "Gaia Condensed", I designed a more abstract type specimen poster. The font was designed to build artwork through the design of the letterforms, so I accomplished just that.

I initially encountered the same problem that I did with the "Slayer Movie" poster: too chaotic with a lack of cohesion. This time, however, I understood my mistake and redesigned the poster.

I leaned in heavily to the architectural designs of the letterforms. The letters looked artificial and digital, which I then associated with video game environments. I created iterations based on this approach and found satisfaction with the designs.

As for the colors, I drifted from the red and blue usually associated with "Gaia Condensed". Instead, I settled on green because the design resembled both a grassy landscape and a circuit board. Overall, this project taught me about organized chaos and abstraction in design.
